Heavy snow in the French Alps caused complete havoc this weekend with some 15,000 drivers stranded overnight on Saturday. On one of the busiest weekends in the ski season, heavy snow hit the Savoy region and the Southern Alps on change-over day! Many people spent the night in their cars and the lucky ones in emergency shelters! Now the calm has returned and almost everyone has either reached home or their ski holiday destination, here are just a few of today's webcam images of the white stuff that caused all the trouble!

The Three Valleys

Even though the Three Valleys ski resorts such as La Tania and Meribel are not often associated with lack of snow, things were looking pretty drastic last week with green slopes being the main subject of discussion in these ski resorts. Skiers and snowboarders who chose the first week of the school holidays were able to enjoy relatively good conditions at high altitudes in the Three Valleys ski area but the white, picture-postcard Christmas they were expecting was not on the agenda! It’s a different story this week after heavy dumps of snow this weekend and sunshine expected for most of the week! Enjoy your ski holidays if you're lucky enough to be in the Three Valleys right now!

Snow forecast for the coming weeks

The snow forecast and the weather forecast for the next few weeks are certainly looking a lot more promising than in recent weeks. Although no snow (or hardly any) is forecast for this week, temperatures will stay low and fresh snow is expected this weekend. Holiday makers can enjoy perfect skiing conditions this week and it looks like the situation will repeat itself for the first week of January too! Check the 14-day weather forecast for Courchevel. Snow at the weekends and sunshine all week! Be prepared if you are travelling by car and make sure you have snow chains and provisions (just in case)!

About Gareth

Skiing was something that was sort of forced on me as a child. When my parents signed me up for the school ski trip when I was 11, I think I sulked for a whole month! However, I have no idea how to thank them as I haven’t looked back since!
