Situated at the foot of the Glencoe Mountains, Glencoe is a tiny village steeped in history. Glencoe has the dubious distinction of having been the site of the treacherous massacre of the MacDonald clan in 1692, but despite this dark past, the villagers continue to offer visitors their signature warm hospitality. Today, Glencoe has made a new name for itself as one of the sites where the third Harry Potter movie was filmed; it’s also close to where Skyfall was filmed. The setting just can’t be beat, with views of the majestic Buchaille Etive Mòr watching over the gurgling rivers and trademark rock formations.
Glencoe Mountain was Scotland’s first ski area. In fact, Glencoe recently inaugurated a new green run called Rankin’s Return in honour of Philip Rankin, the “Godfather of the Scottish ski industry,” who oversaw the installation of the first-ever permanent lift tow in Scotland at Glencoe in 1956. The popular ski resort is just a 20-minute drive from Glencoe Village. In keeping with the geography of the region, the ski area is known for its steeps and its off-piste skiing, making it a sensible choice for expert skiers looking for some more challenging terrain.
Alternate activities
Activities in Glencoe mainly centre around nature, with mountain walking trails where you can retrace the steps of the Glencoe Massacre or explore the Lochan, sculpted to look like the Canadian Rockies. If you have a car, you shouldn’t miss taking a drive to see the wonderful scenery on the way to the Glen Etive. Winter climbing is also possible at the Aonach Dubh.
Restaurants and bars
Glencoe is famous for its ales, which you can sample in the local pubs. The Clachaig Inn has great food and live music on the weekends, and The Glencoe Gathering has a lively atmosphere and tasty fish and chips. Together with nearby Ballachulish, Glencoe offers plenty of restaurants and accommodation.
Families
Families are best off staying in Fort William, as there aren’t too many child-friendly facilities at Glencoe. The nearest nursery is in Fort William.
