Cheap ski holidays – do they exist?

Finding cheap ski holidays can be like searching for the perfect man – just when you think you’ve finally found a good deal, there are always hidden surprises! Spending less is a priority for most people because, let’s admit it, ski holidays are not cheap! Cheap ski holidays cannot really exist because of the many expenses involved – travel to the ski resort, accommodation, ski passes, equipment rental and maybe ski lessons too! We may not be able to offer you cheap ski holidays but how does less expensive sound? It is possible to spend less for your ski holidays if you follow our top 5 tips below.

Tip 1 for cheap ski holidays: Ski outside school holidays

Easier said than done if you have children under 18! For those without children or whose children no longer ski with them, it's obvious that periods outside school holidays are more favorable for cheap ski holidays. The trick if you do have kids is to find a country where the local ski holidays do not coincide with the UK term times – there's a bit of research involved but it could be well worth it. If you have young children, you could always arrange to take them out of school for one week – but I never said that of course! When you compare the prices in and outside school holiday times, you can start to believe that cheap ski holidays really do exist!

Tip 2 for cheap ski holidays: Staying in the valleys

For sure, all you purists out there will be saying that nothing beats ski-in, ski-out accommodation but if it’s cheap ski holidays you’re looking for then this is one sacrifice you can make which will save you a lot of money. Many ski resorts have what are called satellite villages, often at lower altitudes, but generally linked to the main ski area by efficient lifts or regular shuttle buses. These villages usually offer excellent opportunities for cheap ski accommodation helping towards your quest for cheap ski holidays… Some examples are the resorts of Brides Les Bains, with its link to Meribel and Orelle which is connected to Val Thorens via the Trois Vallées Express! Similarly, you can find cheap accommodation in Bourg Saint Maurice and easily access Les Arcs via the funicular.

Tip 3 for cheap ski holidays: Choose a ski resort adapted to your level

We’ve already talked a lot about ski passes recently in our blog and this is certainly one part of your budget where you can save a lot of money helping towards your cheap ski holidays. Choosing ski resorts with ski areas adapted to your level is certainly worth considering. Although everyone likes to name drop, is it really worth going to the Trois Vallées if it’s the first time your kids will be skiing with you all day or if you’re a complete first time skier. 600 kilometers of ski slopes might be a bit OTT in these cases! For a cheaper ski holiday, the sunny, southern ski resort of Isola 2000, for example, will probably suffice with its 120 km of ski slopes! Saving up to 135 euros per person on your 6-day ski passes is a great way of spending less on your ski holidays.

Tip 4 for cheap ski holidays: Book ski equipment in advance

The ski hire sector has become more and more competitive in recent years meaning there are many great offers that can contribute to your cheap ski holidays. In France, in particular, there are many big sports names such as Decathlon and Intersport that now offer ski hire online. A real price war is on meaning that on midrange equipment (most frequently rented), you can save up to 40% by booking in advance. Cheap ski holidays here you come!

Tip 5 for cheap ski holidays: Reduce your food budget

Because transporting food up from the valley is expensive, prices in small grocery shops in ski resorts may seem extortionate. The problem is that once you arrive in your ski resort, you don’t have any choice and are obliged to pay the high prices. If you’re travelling by car, still have some space and you’re not arriving at unsociable hours, you can stop off at a big supermarket (such as Carrefour or Auchan in France) down in the valley. For a family of 4, you could easily save between 100 and 200 euros on a weekly shop, depending on what you buy of course! If this idea doesn’t sound tempting, then having your week’s shopping delivered may be more interesting for you. In some ski resorts, for only 60 euros per person, your kitchen cupboards will be full for the week (for breakfast and dinner only). This is certainly one way to spend less but also a great way to enjoy your cheap ski holidays even more.

About Nikki

Being lucky enough to have parents who were crazy about skiing, my love for the mountains started when I was 4 years old on our first family ski holiday to Austrian ski resort of Obergurl. One ski holiday a year was never enough and tears rolled down my face as I looked out the back window of the car on the drive down the valley on the way home!
