Deer Valley in short

  • Consistently ranked among North America's top ski resorts
  • Small but posh resort town
  • No snowboarders allowed

Deer Valley is a high-end ski resort with luxury accommodation and gourmet restaurants situated just a stone’s throw from Main Street in Park City. The base extends up the mountain to the Silver Lake area, where you’ll find accommodation and more restaurants connected to the ski area by a series of short, easy runs. Deer Valley prides itself on its service and attention to detail, with uniformed ski valets and a very high ratio of instructors to skiers. Prices can be rather steep but this is a one-of-a-kind experience and skiers staying in the area should consider visiting the resort for at least a day. Nearby you’ll find Park City, a popular winter sports base with lots to do and a thriving nightlife scene.

Deer Valley is an exclusive ski resort that aims to offer an upscale experience to all its guests. Unfortunately, this is bad news for snowboarders, who are banned from the slopes. The ski area is immaculately groomed and although the resort benefits from a good amount of natural powder, snowmaking facilities are always there for top-ups. Slopes are never too crowded thanks to limits in lift pass sales. Deer Valley is a frequent host mountain for FIS Freestyle World Cup events. As a ski area, Deer Valley is known for its well-groomed cruisers and powdery glades, with snow that ranks among the best in North America. Most of the terrain is easier than at neighbouring resorts, and Deer Valley has no snow parks. It’s the perfect choice for families, beginner skiers and anyone who wants to spend a few days being coddled while enjoying a stress-free ski experience. However, there are some challenging pistes and more adventurous skiers will enjoy the black-diamond tours that take you to lesser-known corners of the mountain. A note of caution, it may be tempting to cross the fence into the Park City ski area but this is prohibited as they are two completely different resorts. Cross-country skiing is possible at nearby golf courses, or venture into the wilderness on your own.

Alternate activities

Aside from skiing, other winter activities at Deer Valley include dogsledding, horse-drawn sledge rides, nighttime snowshoe tours and hot air balloon rides. Many of the hotels have spas. The state of Utah has large tracts of untouched natural landscape. Deer Valley is considered an ideal starting point for hikes through this impressive area.

Restaurants and bars

You can pick from around a dozen gourmet restaurants at the base and the Silver Lake area – two favourites are Fireside Dining, where you can find everything from raclette to leg of lamb cooked in an open fire; and the appropriately named Seafood Buffet. For après-ski, you’re best off in Park City, where there is a variety of bars along Main Street.

Families

Children are at home here, with tailor-designed activities for any age. Furry mountain mascots will greet kids who venture along the Adventure Trails, while the Children’s Center allows more artistic individuals to express themselves through arts and crafts. Ski lessons are available starting from the age of 3 and childcare from the age of 2 months.
