Ski area Lake District Ski Club – Raise

Lake District Ski Club – Raise in short

  • Excellent snowfall
  • Challenging pistes
  • Breathtaking views of the Lake District mountains

Raise is nestled in the Lake District among some of England’s highest peaks, including the Helvellyn and the Catstycam. The ski area at Raise is run by the Lake District Ski Club, founded in 1936. Although it has only one 360m button lift, the ski area has a sizeable offering of pistes, with up to 9 routes depending on the conditions. Raise does not groom its pistes, which makes for exciting and varied skiing as they are always different. The ski area enjoys descents with a 500m difference in altitude, and the longest piste is over a kilometre long. There are some off-piste routes available for those who don’t mind a bit (more) of a hike.

The volunteers who run the ski area are a dedicated group who are happy to give tips on the best runs of the day. However, skiers and snowboarders should have a solid foundation and be confident in their abilities before visiting Raise. Raise does not offer lessons or equipment for rent. As always when skiing in England, be sure to check weather conditions before heading up and bring snow chains or winter tires, as well as a shovel in case you need to dig out a parking space. The ski area is an hour’s hike in winter conditions from the car park, so it is also wise to bring a map, a compass and a pair of walking boots, and go with someone who knows the area instead of attempting the hike on your own. There is no cafeteria but the recently opened member’s hut provides toilets, heating and electricity, as well as a kettle and a place to hang your hat while you eat your lunch. It is also possible to leave skis and boards at the hut all winter to avoid having to hike with them every time.
