Guaranteed thrills on the bobsleigh track at La Plagne!

If the idea of speeding along walls of ice at more than 120 km per hour, rushing headlong into a tortuous and icy tunnel gets your heart racing, then book your next ski holiday in the popular ski resort of La Plagne or nearby Montchavin Le Coches. You can experience the thrills of piloting a real bobsleigh on the Olympic circuit in La Plagne. With three different types of bobsleigh available, the bob-raft, bob-racing and the speed luge, you can either go with a group, with or without a pilot or all alone! The Bob Experience is a once-in-a-lifetime experience not to be missed if you are staying in or around La Plagne this winter.

Three different ways to enjoy the experience

When the ski resort of La Plagne, part of the Paradiski area, realised how many ski holiday guests were fascinated by their bobsleigh track, it decided to offer 3 different options to discover the track safely. The bob-raft is a self-guided, articulated bobsleigh carrying four people at a time and allowing all participants to enjoy the view down the track and really feel the sensation of speed whether they are at the front or the back. The bob-raft has a self-locking system at critical areas of the circuit when it reaches speeds of up to 80 km per hour! There is a timer installed on the track to measure your performance and to see if you break any records! Even more spectacular is the bob-racing option. It is possible to use the services of a professional bobsleigh pilot to create the pleasure of a descent in the same conditions as a real competition to reach speeds of nearly 120 km per hour. Finally, for the more adventurous, the speed luge is a one-on-one experience – just you and the luge! Protected by metal caging to prevent the luge from flipping over, you experience extremely high speeds in a semi lying down position only a few centimeters from the ice!

The track at La Plagne, one of the most technical in the world

La Plagne is currently the only resort in France which has a bobsleigh track in perfect operating condition, since the closure of those in Chamonix and Villard de Lans, both of which were created for the 1924 and 1968 Winter Olympics respectively. The bobsleigh track in La Plagne, which is rightly regarded as one of the most demanding in the world, put athletes to the test in the 1992 Olympic Games based in Albertville. Since then, the track is still regularly used as a venue for World Cup events. At 1500 meters long, this track offers no less than 19 bends with alternating covered and uncovered sections. The total altitude drop is 124 meters and at various points on the slope, there is a 15% gradient!

Practical details to make the most of this activity

This is a great activity to try out after a day on the slopes – if you haven’t had a thrilling enough day yet! The Olympic track opens every afternoon at 4:30 pm from Tuesday to Sunday during the winter season. As this activity is quite extreme, only children over 14 years old and more than 1 meter 30 high are authorised to try the Bob Experience with written consent of an adult. Depending on which option you choose, prices vary between 41 euros and 115 euros per person, but there are special packages for families. The unforgettable memories you go away with are worth every centime!

About Nikki

Being lucky enough to have parents who were crazy about skiing, my love for the mountains started when I was 4 years old on our first family ski holiday to Austrian ski resort of Obergurl. One ski holiday a year was never enough and tears rolled down my face as I looked out the back window of the car on the drive down the valley on the way home!
