Glencoe Mountain was hit by a serious fire on Christmas day that ravaged the base station, briefly leaving the Scottish ski resort without power, communications, a restaurant or toilets.
According to Glencoe Mountain, the fire started around 2am but went unnoticed for several hours as the resort was closed for Christmas. 6 fire crews were despatched to help tackle the blaze but were unable to save most of the base station. The ski resort remained closed to the public on December 26th while crews worked to secure the structure.
Snowmaking continued and the slopes re-opened to the public on December 27th, albeit with limited ski hire, no base station cafe, and a temporary ticket office. Glencoe Mountain has requested that guests bring cash as most of the card machines were melted in the fire. While accommodation is now open and has power, guests must also bring food for the evenings.
To add another tragic twist to the tale, the ski resort saw rainy, windy weather yesterday and was only able to open a few slopes for skiing, snowboarding and sledging. Nevertheless, some webcams and communication are up and running and the ski resort is cautiously optimistic.
