If you’re a snowboarding fanatic who just cannot wait for the first snowfalls, then there is a solution other than snowboarding on expensive glaciers. Mountainboarding, also commonly known as All-Terrain Boarding (ATB), Dirtboarding or Offroad Boarding, is a little-known sport, which offers a very similar sensation to snowboarding. A mountainboard is made up of similar components to those of a snowboard but also has four wheels with pneumatic tires, and two steering mechanisms known as trucks. Just about anywhere is the the simple answer! Mountainboarders, also known as riders, can ride boardercross tracks, grassy slopes, skateparks, ski slopes, slopestyle parks, mountain biking trails and BMX courses. The possibility to ride such a variety of terrain is due to the tough, hard-wearing pneumatic tires that can deal with just about any kind of surface. Many ski resorts in the Alps and the Pyrenees open a number of their ski lifts and cable cars to give access to mountain biking fanatics. These lifts are, therefore, accessible to mountainboarders too which opens up vast playgrounds where hours of fun can be had ! Just like with any sport, don’t forget your safety helmet and protection equipment and never go alone!
In 1993, two friends Patrick McConnell and Jason Lee developed the first mountainboard prototypes in California in the US. They started the company MBS and in 1994 they manufactured their first 35 mountainboards. There has been no looking back since as this sport took off among bored snowboarders looking for a way to keep busy in the summer months! From 1999, when investors became interested, the company started to design innovative new mountain boards and celebrated their tenth anniversary in 2003 with the launch of various products such as the Matrix truck, F3 bindings and T1 tires which are all still available on the market today.
Since its humble beginnings back in the 90s, mountainboarding has litterally taken off all around the world. Today, there are many different brands competing to produce the latest, fastest, coolest mountainboard!! There are international festivals such as the Breakthrough festival in Moscow held in the olympic stadium where top riders from around the world get together each year to give one of the best demos in mountainboarding history! International freestyle competitions attract more and more participants each year.

Being lucky enough to have parents who were crazy about skiing, my love for the mountains started when I was 4 years old on our first family ski holiday to Austrian ski resort of Obergurl. One ski holiday a year was never enough and tears rolled down my face as I looked out the back window of the car on the drive down the valley on the way home!
