15 activities you have to try at Saalbach

The Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn is one of the largest and most diverse ski areas in Austria, with around 270km of pistes. The behemoth ski area boasts plenty of terrain for every level of skier and snowboarder – beginners will love the wide blue pistes, while more advanced skiers can try the snowparks or go freeriding at Fieberbunn. You can choose from among around 70 diverse mountain restaurants and there are plenty of après-ski pubs, too. But what really sets the Skicircus apart from other ski areas in the Alps? Here are 15 things you have to try on your ski holiday here.

1. Ski from Saalbach to Fieberbrunn (and back)

With the opening of the TirolS gondola in the 2015/2016 ski season, the freeride paradise of Fieberbrunn is now connected to the rest of the Skicircus. This means it’s possible to ski all the way from Saalbach to Fieberbrunn, where you can discover a totally different facet of the Skicircus and still make it back to Saalbach for après-ski.

2. Après-ski in a bar of your choosing

Are you more of a rustic winebar or a noisy pub kind of person? Doesn’t matter, in Saalbach you have your pick! Boasting everything from rousing après-ski nightclubs to calm little bars, this is one ski resort where party animals will never get bored.

3. Ride a snowmobile

Have you always wanted to zoom across the snow in a snowmobile? Now is your chance! Sign up for a guided session at Saalbach’s Snowmobile City. True daredevils can also choose to drive the snowmobile themselves!

4. Go off-piste at Fieberbrunn

Such is Fieberbrunn's renown in the professional freeriding world that it hosts the Freeride World Tour every year. Outside of the competition dates, we lesser mortals can enjoy the deep powder and fresh lines to be had here – just make sure to hire a guide and be well-versed in avalanche response measures if you plan on tackling the off-piste terrain.

5. Take a ride on the Flying Fox at Leogang

For a real adrenaline kick, you have to head to the Flying Fox at Leogang. Measuring 1600m with a height up to 143m, this is one of the fastest, longest ziplines in the world, where people can reach speeds of up to 130km/hr.

6. Tour the Skicircus with the Skicircus Challenge

The Skicircus Challenge is a fantastic way to get to know the entire Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn. The route is 72km long and takes around 7 hours for most skiers and snowboarders. Be warned – you’ll need to keep up a quick rhythm if you want to finish this in one day!

7. Go skiing after sunset

Night skiing is a special experience that everybody should try at least once in a lifetime. Not only does the Skicircus offer normal night skiing, it also opens the snow park so you can practise your skills under the stars! The Nightpark in Hinterglemm is open Monday through Saturday until 9:30pm (and Sundays until 4:30pm).

8. Hike the Baumzipfelweg

A nice activity for the whole family is winter hiking on the Baumzipfelweg. This tree-top trail winds its way about 30m above the ground, making it the highest tree-top trail in Europe. The highlight is the “Alpine Golden Gate Bridge”, an impressive suspension bridge up to 42m high that offers panoramic views of the mountains and valley.

9. Attend the Freeride World Tour in Fieberbrunn

Do you prefer cheering on others instead of tackling that intimidating deep powder yourself? You might enjoy the Freeride World Tour, which takes place in Fieberbrunn from March 9-15 this year.

10. Explore the streets of Saalbach

Saalbach is a cute town with a pedestrianised village centre. Wander down the twisting streets and investigate the little shops and pubs. If nothing else, you can get a head-start on choosing your après-ski joint!

11. Ski the 7km-long Jausernabfahrt

You can’t go to the Skicircus and not ski the Jausernabfahrt. This wide 7km-long piste starts at the top of the Schattberg and leads all the way to Vorderglemm. You can get back to Saalbach using a combination of the Schönleitenbahn I&II plus several other lifts, or take the skibus.

12. Hit the casino in Hinterglemm

The casino isn’t necessarily the first thing that pops into your head when you’re thinking of non-skiing activities to do at a ski resort, but if you like a bit of gambling, you’ll find some options at the Skicircus. The Card Casino in Hinterglemm is particularly recommended. Remember to set a limit and stay within it!

13. Go sledging

We just can’t get enough of sledging. Cruising along in the snow in a real wooden sledge... it’s guaranteed to be a great time! You’ll find loads of options across the Skicircus where you can partake in this favourite winter activity.

15. Drink in the view from the Kohlmaiskopf

Pretty much the whole ski area offers fantastic views, but if you want some truly amazing spots, look no further than the top of the Kohlmaiskopf (you can get there via the Kohlmaisgipfelbahn or the Panorama lifts). You’ll feel like you’re on top of the world up there!
