Unique winter sport village
Located right next to a stunning fjord, Stranda is not your typical ski town. The population here has historically worked in the food and furniture trades, but thanks to the spectacular location tourism is also fast on the rise here. There is one hotel in the village centre but most snow sports enthusiasts choose to stay in one of the typical Norwegian cabins near the Strandafjellet ski area, just over 5km from the town. The cabins are located in the mountains and are often accessible on skis.
Stranda is a sprawling town with a plethora of Norwegian wooden huts. Industry here revolves around the water from the fjord, which is a bit of a shame for the scenery. In the centre you'll find a pretty wooden church, as well as a large supermarket and an assortment of shops and restaurants. This shouldn't be your top choice if you're after a rowdy afternoon of après-ski. The real draw of the town is the unique surroundings - skiing at nearby Strandafjellet with views of the fjords is an unforgettable experience. Don't miss a visit to Geirangerfjord, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Stranda also has 25km of groomed cross-country trails, as well as possibilities for ski touring up to the unspoiled mountain peaks with views of the fjords. Stranda has some of the best off-piste skiing in Scandinavia, which is best done with a guide who can help minimise the avalanche risk. If you're looking for a unique experience, take a Ski & Sail tour and discover the scenic ski resorts by boat. Explore these destinations on skis and take a short break to visit the historic city of Bergen or the beautiful Jugendstil city of Ålesund.
