Popular ski clothing brand Spyder is a staple on the slopes, with its recognisable spider symbol on the jacket and ski pants. This American brand has been producing high-quality technical ski clothing since 1978 and is highly respected by skiers and snowboarders from around the world. That's why we figured it was time to put Spyder's 2019/20 collection through its paces! Read more about our experience with Spyder in this article.

High altitudes and below-freezing test conditions

We chose to test both male and female ski clothing as part of our research process and after some investigating on the Spyder website, we decided on lined ski suits that were particularly well-suited to cold-weather conditions. We wore this ski gear on our trip to Obergurgl in November and evaluated how it performed at high altitudes. While we had anticipated freezing weather and snow, temperatures hovered just below zero for most of our trip. However, with one day of sleet and one day of beautiful bluebird weather, we had everything we needed to gain a full appreciation of the Spyder gear.

Men's ski jacket: Leader GTX

For our men's jacket we chose the Leader GTX, a lively yet stylish men's jacket in blue with lining for extra warmth. We ordered a medium, which turned out to be on the smaller side, but the robust material didn't restrict our movements in any way. The model is fairly classic but has a few modern features including an adjustable hood and comfortable stretch panels in the lining. Extra touches include a goggle cleaning cloth, a pocket for ski goggles and cuffs under the sleeves to protect against the snow and the cold. With just a thermal shirt underneath, we were still toasty even on the coldest day of our trip. However, we would probably recommend wearing an extra midlayer on extra-cold days. The jacket sells at a recommended retail price of  €550. Shop now >

Women's ski jacket: Poise GTX

This eye-catching jacket makes it impossible for your friends to lose you while skiing and is great for people who love being the centre of attention! Pair it with a nice white helmet and you'll be one of the most stylish people on the slopes. Just like the men's model, the jacket is lined with Primaloft and includes Gore-Tex to keep you dry. And indeed, we were perfectly warm and dry even while it was sleeting outside! On very warm days the jacket might be a little too warm - we were fine with just a sweater. But on cold days it's a wonderful feeling not to be freezing cold on the lift! The jacket feels sturdy and comfortable and allows enough freedom of movement - the ideal ski jacket for relaxed skiers who are easily cold. This jacket sells at a recommended retail price of €550. Men's ski pants: Dare

These classic ski pants have straps that are neither too large nor too small. As with the jacket, the pants include Gore-Tex to help you stay warm and dry. We particularly appreciated the zippers in these pants, which can be opened for ventilation when you're feeling warm. The ski pants are slightly stretchy, allowing for more flexibility. These are great ski pants for colder days and are guaranteed to keep the cold and snow out. Recommended retail price: €300. Shop now >

Women's ski pants : Echo

We paired the orange jacket with light blue Echo ski pants by Spyder. These high-quality ski pants have a kind of neoprene band around the top which sits comfortably and connects the stomach and back. Once we found out how to use the push buttons, we also found them really convenient. The ski pants are nice and warm and the thin thermal layer underneath is sure to keep you warm, ideal for less-active skiers. Recommended retail price: €350. Shop now >
