9 things skiers and snowboarders do... but we won't admit it!

There’s nothing like a ski holiday! Fresh air, happy memories and lots of fun playing in the snow. But somehow, ski holidays somehow seem to bring out a side of us that we’re not exactly proud of. Do you go to bed at 9pm, wear the same clothes all week or flirt with the good-looking skiers in the après-ski bar? You’re not alone, but sshhh, we’ll never admit it! How many of these dcan you relate to?

1. Wear the same clothes all week

An extra bonus of skiing every day is that you have an excuse to wear the exact same clothes every day (well, maybe you could afford to bring a change of underwear). Ski suits are expensive and the carry-on luggage restrictions don’t leave room for luxuries. It’s all well and good until you notice people edging away from you on the chairlift – then maybe it’s time to give your shirt a quick rinse in the hotel sink.

2. Go on holidays with your parents

It’s not cool to go on holidays with your parents... unless they’re freakishly expensive ski holidays! Whether you’re 14, 24 or 40, it’s still cool to go on ski holidays with your parents. Plus, there’s nothing like family bonding on the slopes.

3. Eat cold pizza for breakfast

If you know the value of fresh tracks, you’ll appreciate the value of last night’s supper as a perfectly acceptable breakfast option. Whether it’s pizza or schnitzel, shove it in your face and let’s go, the lifts are about to open! Tip: If you don’t have a refrigerator in your room, stick your food outside and the sub-zero temperatures will do a great job of keeping it cold overnight.

4. Skip the shower

It was straight from that last black piste, to the après-ski bar, and now it’s 2am and somehow you’re only just stumbling back to your bed. Showering somehow drops down to the very bottom of your priority list. Oh well, you won’t be so grossed out about putting on that crusty ski shirt tomorrow morning!

5. Play board games

They’re called “bored” games for a reason, amirite? But on ski holidays, it’s somehow fun, in a nostalgic kind of way, to indulge in a game of Risk or Monopoly. Spice it up by turning these old-fashioned family favourites into drinking games!

6. Narrowly avoid a heart attack on the black piste

“Will we take the black piste?” some enthusiastic idiot in your group yells out. “Sure, great!” we all scream in unison. Cue the masked terror in half the group as you approach an icy precipice with no logical way out. Whose idea were these ski holidays, anyway?!

Nice, a black piste! (nawt)

7. Bedtime at 9pm

Skiers and snowboarders fall into two camps: those who après until the wee hours, and those who fall into bed at 9pm. Whether you’re exhausted from your first day on skis or from shredding black runs all day, it’s perfectly acceptable to go to bed early on your ski holidays. You can probably get a few hours of skiing in the morning before the partyers regain consciousness.

8. Take ski lessons just for the cute instructor

You had pretty much made your mind up to stay off the slopes this year and have a relaxing holiday sipping glühwein in the chalet. But then you caught sight of the ski instructor! Next thing you know, you’ve signed up for a whole week of ski lessons. Try these chat-up lines and maybe you’ll have a magical holiday after all!

9. Flirt at après-ski

Après-ski is a chance to celebrate your love of the mountains with like-minded snow sports enthusiasts. Aww, lovely! For most of us, it’s rather a chance to sing along lustily to our favourite après-ski hits, down pitchers of beer or Jägerbombs and attempt to woo the more attractive of the bar’s occupants.

Dancing and flirting go hand-in-hand during après-ski

What other embarrassing things are you guilty of during a ski holiday?

About Danielle

Born and raised in the ski paradise of Vancouver, Canada, I learned to ski before I can remember, balancing precariously on my parents’ skis as they sailed down the hill. I started snowboarding in my teens and am now delighted to be exploring everything Europe’s ski scene has to offer!
