Ski holiday in Saalbach: in photos

The village of Saalbach is nestled in the heart of the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, with access to the 270km of slopes in this enormous Austrian ski area. You can ski for days without doing the same slope twice – if you’re really bent on getting to know every ski resort of the Skicircus, you can also take on the Skicircus Challenge. As for Saalbach itself, it boasts a pretty, car-free village centre with easy access to the ski lifts. Our Snowplaza team recently paid another visit to Saalbach and we can’t wait to share our pictures with you!

Endless skiing

Thanks to its connection with the rest of the Skicircus, Saalbach belongs to one of the biggest linked ski areas in Austria. You’ll find no shortage of slopes for all levels here, and when you’re in need of a drink or a hearty meal, you can choose from one of the many on-mountain restaurants.

Panoramic views

Featuring the Schattberg Ost (2020m) – this is just one of the many lovely mountain views you’ll enjoy while skiing at Saalbach.

Photo ops

When you stumble across a nice view like this one, you don’t want to miss the photo op! You’ll find this panoramic viewpoint at the end station of the Panorama lift on the Kohlmaiskopf. The blue piste #52 will take you back down to the valley.

Skicircus Challenge

The choice of skiing itineraries from Saalbach is varied and seemingly endless. But we strongly recommend the Skicircus Challenge. This 7-hour ski circuit is one of the longest in the Alps. Recommended for expert skiers and snowboarders only, the ski circuit measures 72km with 12 000m of altitude gained and lost. Sound a little intimidating? Consider trying another ski circuit instead: you can choose from the Saalbach circuit (20km), the Hinterglemm circuit (24 or 21km), the Leogang circuit (26km) or the Tyrol circuit (22km).

Delicious Käsespätzle at the Sky Rest

There’s no shortage of mountain restaurants to satisfy your hunger cravings while skiing at the Skicircus. We recommend the Sky Rest, at the Schattberg Ost. If the weather is nice, you’ll have a fantastic view from the window tables. Of course, you can also sit outside on the terrace if it’s not too chilly. The reasonably priced menu includes all sorts of Austrian specialties. Cheese lovers will love the Käsespätzle – said by some to be the best Käsespätzle ever! If you’re not a cheese person, the Tiroler Gröstl is also delicious.

Lovely wide pistes

The Skicircus has an abundance of broad pistes – with 140km of blue slopes, it’s the perfect ski resort for beginners to practise their skills. Of course, it’s not just beginners that will have fun here. Intermediate and expert skiers will also enjoy the varied and challenging slopes.

Cable cars vs. chairlifts

The Skicircus has a high proportion of cable cars compared with chairlifts or button lifts. While this does require you to step out of your skis or snowboard more often, it’s a huge advantage in windy or freezing-cold weather.

Hot cocoa

One of the most important criteria on a ski holiday is whether the ski resort has good hot cocoa places! Well, we’re pleased to announce that Saalbach doesn’t disappoint. One of the best places for a hot cocoa here is the Edelweiss Hütte, on the Kohlmaiskopf. The Edelweiss Hütte has sun loungers where you can make yourself comfortable while you enjoy your hot cocoa (or something stronger)!

Valley and village views

Saalbach is arranged so that many of the pistes give a nice view of the village and the rest of the valley winding off into the distance.

Family-friendly ski resort

Saalbach is a perfect choice for families with young children. The ski school offers great lessons with qualified instructors that will help your child polish their technique on the beginner-friendly slopes.

That yellow church

It’s one of the best-known landmarks in Saalbach: the yellow church. You’ll see the distinctive icon right away as you arrive in the village, and it’s also visible from many points on the slopes.

Ski the longest piste in the Skicircus and stop for lunch at the Hecherhütte

Piste #68, the Viehhofen, measures 7.5km and is the longest slope in the Skicircus. This blue slope is the ideal cruiser, especially as you’ll find the perfect excuse for a break halfway down at the conveniently situated Hecherhütte. Indulge in a drink or a spot of food and enjoy the sunshine on the rustic mountain hut terrace. Just be aware that from the bottom of this run you have to take the skibus back to the Schönleitenbahn as there is no lift.

Enjoy an Aperol Spritz at the eva,ALM

Start off the evening right with an Aperol Spritz at the eva,ALM, a relaxing bar in the village with a cosy outdoor terrace. But you’ve plenty of choices in Saalbach, which is full of small shops, restaurants, bars and pubs.

Après-ski in Saalbach

Saalbach is just as well-known for its après scene as for its skiing. The party begins in the early afternoon and continues well into the wee hours. We recommend Bauer’s Schi-Alm and the Hinterhag Alm.
