Cold snap in the Alps: Temperatures falling to -29°C

It’s been a chilly week in Europe, with a cold snap sweeping much of the continent. As might be expected, ski resorts in the Alps are expecting bitter weather this week, with glacial temperatures expected to hit ski resorts in some parts of Switzerland and France, Austria and Italy. On the bright side, the end of the week should bring fresh snow and slightly warmer temperatures – good news for those planning to head to the Alps at the weekend! Are you going skiing or snowboarding this week? Find out which ski resorts will be the coldest and prepare yourself accordingly!

Temperatures plummet in ski resorts across the Alps

Many ski resorts will start off the week with temperatures in the negative double digits. L’Alpe d’Huez was at -20°C this morning, the ski area at Chamonix is also expecting to hit -20°C and the Grande Motte Glacier at Tignes (3300m) will drop to -26 °C tonight. St. Moritz-Engadin is dipping to -23°C today, and Andermatt will see temperatures of -28 °C. It’s a similar situation over in Austria, where parts of Ischgl plummeted to -29°C last night and temperatures will remain around -20°C for a few nights in a row at Obertauern and Saalbach. Even the village centres for these ski resorts, for the most part, won’t get any warmer than the negative double digits until closer to the end of the week. Over in Italy, the Dolomiti Superski resorts are expecting temperatures as low as -26 °C. Brr!

About Danielle

Born and raised in the ski paradise of Vancouver, Canada, I learned to ski before I can remember, balancing precariously on my parents’ skis as they sailed down the hill. I started snowboarding in my teens and am now delighted to be exploring everything Europe’s ski scene has to offer!
