Steamboat (United States)

Steamboat in short

  • Height: 2052 metres
  • The birthplace of 'Champagne Powder'
  • Accommodation at the valley station
  • Very popular among snowboarders

Once a Wild West town, Steamboat has retained its authentic and unpretentious vibe. The family-friendly resort receives an average of 9m of snow yearly and is famous for its light and fluffy “champagne powder” – in fact, they hold the trademark for this term!

At the bottom station of the ski area you will find some accommodation, shops and restaurants. The lift also starts here and takes skiers up to the Thunderhead, where they can go on to the Storm Peak or the Sunshine Peak. If you’re looking for a livelier ambience and more amenities, downtown Steamboat Springs is just a 10-minute drive from the valley station. It is advisable to book accommodation here, because the actual valley station itself does not have much else to offer. The bus service that links the two areas is free and runs frequently. Steamboat is a three-hour drive from Denver International Airport.

Alternate activities

Non-skiing activities include snowmobiling, sledge ride dinners, hot air balloon and helicopter tours, tubing and snowshoeing. Steamboat also boasts hot springs and spa facilities. The ski resort hosts regular events, including a Cowboy Up Party in January in honour of its origins!

Restaurants and bars

Most après-ski takes place in the valley. Hotspots are the Slopeside Grill, the Bear River Bar and Gondola Joe’s. In Steamboat Springs, over 100 restaurants and four breweries await hungry and thirsty skiers. The Old Town Pub delivers exactly what the name suggests: a cold beer and a pool table!

Families

Steamboat is consistently ranked as one of the best ski resorts for families by several American magazines. Under the supervision of a parent or grandparent, children under 12 ski for free in Steamboat. Childcare is offered, as are kids’ lessons, and the ski area has several kid-only areas.
