  • Family-friendly
  • Decent snow conditions for the area
  • Small-scale ski club with lots of enthusiasm

A small ski area with a lot of heart, Ski-Allenheads (430m-545m) is located in Northumberland just a two-and-a-half hour drive from Manchester. The ski area is entirely run by volunteers and has origins dating back to the late 1800’s with the British Norwegian Ski Club. You must be a member to use the facilities; be sure to look into applying before you arrive at the ski area. It’s also worthwhile double-checking opening times before heading up as these depend on having manpower available to run the lifts. Check snow conditions before driving.

Ski-Allenheads offers two semi-permanent rope tows plus several more depending on snow conditions, which are fairly reliable thanks to the shelter provided by a nearby forest. The ski area is very family-friendly and excellent for learning. Pistes are fairly easy and about 100m long each, but plans are in the making to install another rope tow on slightly more difficult terrain. It will be exciting to keep an eye on this ski area in the coming years.
