Access to the famous La Thuile ski area
La Rosière has yet to be discovered by the masses despite its obvious qualities: great skiing and snowboarding and a privileged south-facing position in the heart of France's Savoie region. Located at 1850m above sea level, La Rosière joins up with the Italian ski resort of La Thuile to form the Espace San Bernardo ski area. Overall, La Rosière therefore grants access to over 150km of wide, sunny ski slopes.
La Rosière offers a range of varied ski runs against a stunning backdrop. Across the border, the Italian La Thuile ski area has 60km off-piste ski slopes and excellent snow coverage due to its north-facing slopes on the Italian side. There is only one snow park in Espace San Bernardo and cross-country skiing possibilities are quite limited, with only 12km of trails. The views from the trails is superb, however, and will not disappoint! As to the village scene, this is not a ski resort for party animals looking for wild, all-night après-ski. La Rosière is a quiet, family-friendly ski resort with some nice bars and restaurants. In contrast with many other French concrete-block ski resorts, La Rosière is an authentic village with understated architecture that blends in with the surroundings. La Rosière is easy to reach from the UK via the Eurostar ski train.
Skiing in La Rosière and the Espace San Bernardo
Traditionally, La Rosière's ski area has been best suited to beginner skiers and snowboarders, with gentle slopes that wind through the trees. Now, intermediate and expert skiers will also find plenty to challenge them here. The new expansion on Mont Valaisan in the 2018/19 ski season opened up 5 new red slopes and a new top altitude of 2800m above sea level. Freeriders can head to the Zittieux snow cross, a secured off-piste area where you can ski off-piste in safer conditions (it's still recommended to equip yourself with avalanche safety equipment and consult ski patrol before heading out). And, of course, you have the Italian portion of the Espace San Bernardo open to you as well! Just don't forget to leave yourself time to get back to the French side before the ski area closes - there's no other way to cross the border! If you want to explore more extensively in the backcountry, there are several permanent ski touring routes as well as extensive off-piste possibilities with professional guides.
Famille Plus
La Rosière has obtained the Famille Plus label, which guarantees a stress-free and family-friendly ski holiday. Beginners can make their first turns for free on the Lutins magic carpet and Manessier drag lift. Move on to the Petit-Saint-Bernard adventure slope, which goes through the trees and has fun and educational features. If your kids are into freestyling, they'll enjoy the mini snow park made especially for the littlest skiers and snowboarders. Les Galopins kids' club will give you a free few hours on the slopes while your children have a blast with other new friends their age. Lift passes are adapted so families can enjoy discounts.
Off the slopes in La Rosière
Enjoy a fondue in the Igloo Ice Bar, test yourself on the climbing wall, try your hand at snowkiting... these are just a few of the many activities on offer at La Rosière! For a truly luxurious way to soothe your aching muscles after a day on the slopes, soak in the natural thermal waters from the heart of the mountain at the Pré St Didier thermal spa. And for a unique experience, take a ride on a traditional one-bladed sledge and finish it off with a hot cup of mulled wine. And, of course, there are all the traditional ski resort activities: ice skating, snowshoeing, dogsledding, or catching a hockey game by the local team!
