Vars-Les-Claux is a modern ski resort that was built in the 60s above Vars-Ste-Marie and the two hamlets of Ste-Catherine and St-Marcellin. The main part of Vars is made up of a mixture of not particularly attractive concrete blocks and traditional chalet style buildings. Vars is extremely popular with French families with children and has a nice relaxed atmosphere. There are plenty of restaurants and some lively après-ski that continues long into the night - especially when many French groups come up at weekends. Generally, there are very few queues at the ski lifts - except at weekends when many French people come up to Vars from the south.
