Paintball : The "Ice" Version!

Paintball is a very popular sport which consists of two teams, with players equipped with paintball guns that shoot balls of paint, fighting against each other on a closed-off field and a player is eliminated when hit by a paint ball! The "ice" version of paintball, also called winter paintball, is fairly new and offers the chance to share the thrills of this exciting sport during your skiing holidays. If, even after an intense day of skiing or snowboarding, your friends or family are still bursting with enthusiasm and energy, ice paintball is the ideal après-ski activity for you and yours.

Ice paintball is all about finesse and tactics!

Just like the classic version of paintball practiced in, or outdoors, ice paintball involves two teams of at least four people each. All team members have a semi-automatic paintball gun that uses compressed air to project balls of paint (biodegradable and washable, of course) which, according to a plan drawn up before the battle by the whole team, they use to shoot their adversaries. If this activity seems a bit too much like a war game to you, then we recommend trying it at least once… Paintball (both types) involves a lot of finesse and tactics… Hiding in places where opponents can’t see you, creeping up on unsuspecting adversaries involves a lot of stealth and good teamwork. Adrenaline levels get pretty high during these chases and ambushes making paintball rather addictive once you’ve tried it. When playing Ice paintball, there are even more elements to take into account! When you exhale in the cold air, your breath can give away your exact position and leaving tracks in the snow could be fatale!

Where can you try ice paintball in the French Alps?

ski resorts are the best place to try ice paintball as they are usually located in the heart of vast woodlands or forested areas. Not far from the French ski resort of Orcières-Merlette in the Southern Alps, for example, the paintball site at Champoléon offers tourists the chance to fight in a specially prepared snow maze in the heart of a forest, along the river Drac. With professional team leaders and equipped with the required protective equipment (a face shield and gloves) you'll embark on an unforgettable battle. In the Savoy, in the Sybelles ski area, you will also find an ice paintball site in the ski resort of Saint-Sorlin d'Arves. The forest area is riddled with shelters and bunkers that help build up a frenetic atmosphere in the silence of the natural surroundings! Ice paintball is becoming a very popular apres-ski activity for adrenaline junkies seeking more thrills after a day of skiing or snowboarding on the slopes.

Ice Mountain paintball

Although there are also ice paintball sites in the popular ski resorts of La Plagne and Megeve, it’s worth mentioning the Ice Mountain complex at Comines, on the Belgian border, a 30-minute drive from Lille. In addition to two indoor ski slopes with artificial snow, there are four ice paintball grounds, including two which are floodlit for even more exciting night battles. You’ll feel almost as if you are in the Alps! You could plan a quick trip to Lille or why not try ice paintball during your ski holidays this winter...

About Gareth

Skiing was something that was sort of forced on me as a child. When my parents signed me up for the school ski trip when I was 11, I think I sulked for a whole month! However, I have no idea how to thank them as I haven’t looked back since!
