Now is the best time to buy winter sports gear

It may seem a little silly to buy skis or snowboards, boots and/or winter sports clothing just when spring is starting, or at least trying, to show its face, but I’m fairly certain you won’t regret it! You’ll have a huge grin on your face when, at the beginning of next season, you come across your brand new skis or snowboard and boots tucked away at the back of the garage and that super cool ski jacket that you had had your eye on for ages and you ended up buying at half the original price… The other advantages are that you’ll have one less thing to think about once you get to your resort and it will give your ski holiday budget a healthy kick start!

Shop local

Although, as I previously mentioned, I am I big fan of anything second hand, I can’t deny that I am also a big fan of sales! There are plenty of sports shops - well in fact I would say nearly all sports shops and sports clothing outlets - that have clearance sales at this time of year so you simply need a bit of time to shop around to find what you’re looking for. You can pick up some really high quality gear at ridiculous prices…

Order online

If you have a particular item in mind, which you’ve already tried on in a shop but you couldn’t quite afford it and you’re willing to spend time surfing, then you can usually find the same item at an even better price online. Trekwear are holding a warehouse clearance sale and have up to 80% off some of their ski gear! Some of the huge brand names such as Snow & Rock have excellent end of season sales and you can find the latest skis, boots and snowboards at very affordable prices. The only problem is you’ll probably have to wait until next winter to use them…

Don’t leave your resort empty handed!

In general ski hire shops in ski resorts renew their main stock each season to be able to offer “the latest high-tech gear” to increasingly demanding customers. Because of this, most shops in resorts offer some incredible deals at the end of the season to make way for next season’s stock – shop around and you could take home a brand new pair of top class skis, snowboard or boots! Fortunately, skis and snowboards are not like computers and mobile phones; they are not out of date as soon as you get them home! Of course, new technologies are introduced each year but generally, there isn’t a mind-blowing, life-changing advance each season that you just can’t live without!

Buying or hiring

If you don’t already have your own gear and are tempted by the great offers available but are not sure if it’s a good idea to buy equipment rather than continue renting, then read my recent article “Hire or buy your ski equipment?” to help you decide which is best for you… Depending on how many times you go skiing each year and IF you go skiing each winter, the cost of buying and transporting equipment could come out even after just one season! Maybe it’s time to get the calculator out!

About Nikki

Being lucky enough to have parents who were crazy about skiing, my love for the mountains started when I was 4 years old on our first family ski holiday to Austrian ski resort of Obergurl. One ski holiday a year was never enough and tears rolled down my face as I looked out the back window of the car on the drive down the valley on the way home!
