Ski Apps for your Smart Phone

From apps that actually teach you how to ski while comparing your technique and style with a virtual instructor to apps that will tell you how extreme you are (or not), there’s now something on the market for every taste and style. It’s difficult to imagine what else app designers could come up with!

We spent some time trying out a few ski apps to help you find your way in the blizzard! Enjoy and let us know if you try one of these apps out on the slopes this season!

For statistics lovers…

Ski Tracks is the UK’s most popular winter sports app. It’s easy to use and gives you tons of great stats about your day on the mountain. You can track your top speed, vertical drop and overall distance skied, and post all this info along with your photos on your Facebook page to keep everyone up to date with your movements!

In the same category, you can also try SnowEdge, which supplies similar information but in much more detail and is more suited to the more competitive members of your group! It literally tracks every move you make throughout your day on the slopes. SnowEdge tracks the distance you travel but also shows your acceleration, speed, actual skiing time and if you’re really extreme, even your airtime! On top of all this, this app measures g-force and the number of turns you make on each slope… a very precise way of finding out who is the best skier in your group!

Back to school!

The Ski School App is a great range of ski lessons adapted to all levels from beginners to experts which aims to help improve your style and technique. Professionally produced videos of ski lessons and movement analysis technology, using split screen video to compare your skiing with your virtual instructor, will boost your style and confidence on the slopes!

For the safety conscious

For those who like to feel reassured, the Mammut Safety App, which has basic functions such as direction, altitude and the angle of the slope using its built-in clinometers, has a little plus point. Although its functions are rather dull in comparison to other apps, Mammut Safety is worth mentioning as it has an SOS option which allows you to send an SMS with your exact co-ordinates if ever you are in need of assistance!

Don't panic!

At present the RealSki App only works in North America, but hopefully it will soon be available in Europe as it really is the most useful app we came across. The RealSki App works using your compass and GPS devise and automatically displays the names of restaurants, landmarks, chairlifts and ski runs around you over your live camera view! Personally this is my dream app as there is nothing more nerve wracking than getting lost on the slopes and ending up on a tricky black run with young kids or not being able to find a restaurant with a toilet!

And just for fun..

The Touch Ski 3D App is the perfect game for those who just can’t accept that their day on the slopes is over! You use your finger to guide your skis down the mountain and over jumps while sipping a drink by the fireside! What more could you ask for?

There are, of course, hundreds of other apps on the market but these were just a few we particularly liked… Leave us your comments or join us on Facebook and tell us which ski apps you like…

Treat your mobile phone to a make-over!

You could even get your mobile phone in ski holiday mode too with a great cover like this one we found!

About Nikki

Being lucky enough to have parents who were crazy about skiing, my love for the mountains started when I was 4 years old on our first family ski holiday to Austrian ski resort of Obergurl. One ski holiday a year was never enough and tears rolled down my face as I looked out the back window of the car on the drive down the valley on the way home!
