Top ski resorts for celebrating New Year's Eve 2019 in the Alps

Out with the old, in with the new: spice things up this year by spending New Year’s Eve 2019 in a ski resort! All across the Alps, skiers and snowboarders will be welcoming in the New Year with snow-filled festivities. Discover an alternative to fireworks with St. Anton’s laser and sound show, or don your sparkliest clothing and get the champagne flowing at a party with top DJs. Better yet, bring the kids and check out the ice sculptures at Val d’Isère or the torch-lit descents in the French and Italian Alps. Enjoy, but don’t enjoy too much – remember New Year’s Day is the best day of the year for earning first tracks!

Val d’Isère

Val d'Isère kicks off its Festi Light events on December 31st. Starting from 6pm, stroll the pedestrianised village streets and enjoy complimentary mulled wine or hot cocoa while you take in the twinkling Airstar lights, jugglers, ice sculptures, fire show and live music. Festi Light will continue every Thursday night from January 10 through March 7.

Méribel

As always, Méribel will put on a New Year's Eve to remember. Enjoy the torch-lit descent and fireworks display while sipping a mug of free hot cocoa or mulled wine, and then head to the giant disco at the Olympic ice skating rink and let the DJs and film clips transport you to another era.

Madonna di Campiglio

Spend New Year’s Eve 2019 in Madonna di Campiglio, a quaint Italian ski town with charming boutiques and many mountain restaurants. The party starts at 6:15pm with a torch-lit skiing display, followed by live DJs and finally fireworks to ring in the New Year.

Mayrhofen

This December 31st, take a magical ride on Mayrhofen's traditional locomotive! The New Year's train will chug through the Zillertal valley, stopping at every station so passengers can enjoy a musical interlude and rounding it all off with a glass of sparkling wine. On January 1st, ring in the New Year by placing a bet on the horse race.

Zermatt

Almost every classy restaurant in Zermatt will be offering a special New Year's Eve dinner, and the party keeps going all night long with live bands and DJs, dancing and of course fireworks. Or, switch it up by attending the masquerade! Zermatt also offers plenty of family-friendly options including a night of games, music and ice skating.

St. Anton

What’s even better than fireworks? A world-class laser and sound show! Once again, St. Anton am Arlberg is bringing us an eco-friendly New Year’s Eve by asking people to donate instead of investing in fireworks, which are dangerous, spread toxic chemicals and scare animals. St. Anton Illuminated will put on a family-friendly laser show followed by an adult laser show for midnight; admission is free and drink proceeds go to charity.

About Danielle

Born and raised in the ski paradise of Vancouver, Canada, I learned to ski before I can remember, balancing precariously on my parents’ skis as they sailed down the hill. I started snowboarding in my teens and am now delighted to be exploring everything Europe’s ski scene has to offer!
