Zermatt to open world's highest gondola for 2018/19 ski season

New 3S gondola at Zermatt

Zermatt is set to complete construction of the world’s highest gondola by autumn 2018, in time for the 2018/19 winter ski season. The 45-million-euro project, announced by Zermatt in 2015, will be carried out by Leitner Ropeways in cooperation with Pininfarina. Pininfarina is known for its work on luxury brands such as Ferrari and Maserati so you can expect the ultimate comfort from those gondola cabins! The new 3S gondola at this posh Swiss ski resort will take skiers and snowboarders up to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at the Klein Matterhorn at 3820m, near the border with Italy.

New gondola will bring skiers and snowboarders up the Klein Matterhorn

Zermatt’s new cable car will connect the Trockener Steg station with the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (Klein Matterhorn) top station, a 3.6km long journey. The trip will take just 9 minutes, allowing Zermatt to increase the carrying capacity of the gondola to 2000 people per hour. Construction has been tricky due to the steep incline, and materials have been supplied from Italy via a 3km long transport cable car. The new mountain station will be located next to the existing route, near the Italian border. Due to be ready at the end of September, the construction of the gondola will have taken a total of almost two years.

Swanky gondola to have glass-bottomed floors and Swarovski crystals

The new 3S gondola will boast 25 plush cabins designed by Pininfarina, promising a comfortable ride up the Matterhorn with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains out the extra-large windows. Four of the cabins have been painstakingly decorated with thousands of sparkling Swarovski crystals, and some cabins even come with glass floors, for those who are brave enough! Each cabin holds a maximum of 28 people.
