In Villars-sur-Ollons in 1937 the first ski lift was built to assist a number of local heroes in their frantic efforts to master some ski jumping skills. It paid off, because one of them, Henri Ruchet, managed to jump the then absolute world record of 87 meters. The Ecole Suisse de Ski in Villars dates back to the winter season of 1930/31 so the people here had an early start in the ski tourism business. Villars-sur-Ollon is still an authentic alpine village where chalet-style buildings and the beautiful train station set the scene.
