Altenberg is internationally renowned for hosting various annual winter sports competitions. Several World Cup events are held here in disciplines such as biathlon and luge. This ski area in the state of Saxony offers a wide range of winter sports opportunities in the Ore Mountains. You can not only go skiing here, but also ride in a bobsleigh or take part in the annual recreational biathlon. There are also numerous cross-country ski trails and hiking routes, along with a few pleasant slopes on the Raupennesthang.
There are several ski mountains around Altenberg, each offering a number of kilometres of slopes. The Hemmschuh is the largest ski area in the region, with 4 kilometres of pistes. The runs may be short, but they are quite varied. The Raupennesthang features a few easy, scenic slopes that are especially popular with families. You can also speed down the mountain on snow tubes or sledges. Thanks to artificial lighting, evening skiing is also possible here. Other slopes in the Altenberg area can be found in Schellerhau, Oberbärenburg and Hermsdorf.
