Largest ski area in the French Pyrenees
At 1800 meters of altitude, nestled in the French Pyrenees, is the ski resort of La Mongie. In summer the village is flooded with cyclists who want to climb the notorious Tourmalet but in winter the cyclists are replaced by snowboarders and skiers. This is a young ski resort with modern hotels and plenty of bars and restaurants for lively apres-ski entertainment. For cross-country skiers and non-skiers, this ski resort is less suitable.
La Mongie, together with Barèges, make up the largest ski area in the French Pyrenees. There are 43 ski lifts that serve more than 100 kilometers of wonderful ski slopes. This spacious ski resort has something to offer every type of skier, even the most avid off-piste enthusiasts. From the 2872 meter high Pic du Midi de Bigorre, where an old observatory is located, there is a particularly challenging off-piste descent - you will see a sign warning you that you are strongly advised to only take this route accompanied by a professional off-piste ski guide - we strongly advice you to do so. A look over the edge makes the average skier shudder because the first part is so steep. This off-piste run easily challenges the likes of those in world-famous ski resorts such as Val d'Isère or Méribel.
