Alta in short

  • 45-minute drive from Salt Lake City Airport
  • Hardcore ski culture
  • No snowboarding allowed

Alta is populated with people who live and breathe to ski, and you’ll find a hardy yet welcoming crowd on your visit here. When it combines its terrain with nearby Snowbird resort - which is owned by a different company but offers the possibility for a combined ski pass - the resulting ski area is one of the largest in the US. Alta receives 14m of powder a year, making it legendary among skiers who gloat about the chance to ski powder without snowboarders “wrecking” it…

Alta is all about the skiing, and this is reflected in the somewhat sparse village facilities. This is not a place you come to relax in the spa or go crazy at the après-ski. Accommodation is mostly in the form of traditional ski lodges, in close proximity to the slopes. Despite the admittedly austere description, Alta remains a favourite with true skiers who are looking for awesome terrain and don’t care so much about the frills.

Alternate activities

Non-skiing activities at Alta are quite limited. The resort offers backcountry climbing and touring, catskiing, heli-skiing, ski racing facilities and early-bird skiing. Notice a common theme?

Restaurants and bars

There is a handful of restaurants and cafes scattered throughout the various bases at Alta, including the Watson Cafe at mid-mountain which serves up hamburgers with a view of Mount Superior and Mount Baldy. Most of the restaurants are quite swank so don't expect a rowdy après-ski scene; head to Salt Lake City if you want more nightlife.

Alta is a good destination for families who are interested in skiing. The Alta Children’s Centre offers childcare for children as young as 6 weeks old, and ski lessons are available for children starting from age 4.
