Amidst a beautiful mountain setting, surrounded by snow-covered hills, lies the historic village of Saint Pierre de Chartreuse. This village is located only 25 km away from Grenoble, in the department of Isere, Rhone - Alpes making it a great choice for weekend skiing. Saint Pierre de Chartreuse has 1011 inhabitants and is situated at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level.
Saint Pierre de Chartreuse came about with the construction of the Grande Chartreuse monastery, founded by Bishop Hugh of Grenoble (St. Hugo). The monastery is now part of the Musée de la Grande Chartreuse, a museum with 900 years of history. The monastery is very crucial to the townscape of Saint Pierre de Chartreuse. The village also has a lovely church, the Saint Hugues Church. The church houses the Museum of Contemporary Religious Art, and there are more than 100 works by the painter Arcabas in the church. The village has many old and charming houses all of which are worth visiting. Saint Pierre de Chartreuse is also quite a lively village with many restaurants and bars and there are lots of events held here creating a nice friendly atmosphere you can enjoy after a day's skiing in the nearby ski area.
